Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare PS4 vs. XBO MP & SP Image Comparison: PS4 Wins With Better IQ In MP

Cod Advanced Warfare feature image

Call of Duty: Advanced is without a doubt the biggest game of the year on the current generation. It is also being released on the PS3, Xbox One and PC. This will be the first game in the series that will utilize a brand new engine specifically designed for current generation and PC focused development. The game’s main developer is Sledgehammer Games while it was developed for the previous generation by High Moon Studios.

If you are one of the folks who have both of the current generation consoles, you can check out the image comparison between both versions below to determine which one best suits your needs.

Image quality wise, the Xbox One version runs at a minimum native resolution of 1360×1080 compared to native 1080p on the PlayStation 4. The thing to note here is that Xbox One employs a dynamic resolution for Single Player campaign and a locked 1360×1080 resolution in Multiplayer, giving the PS4 a distinct advantage for Multiplayer, as it runs at native 1080p on PS4. Hence we have compared both SP and MP for the game.

First up is the single player comparison, which also highlights the crushed blacks on the Xbox One. (Source for XBO shots)

Next up is the multiplayer comparison, which are largely in the favor of the PlayStation 4 due to a superior IQ at native 1080p.

We already know PS4 is clearly better when it comes to graphics, that’s not even up for debate anymore, only the most die hard brainwashed xbots would try to argue that fact, lets just move on now, the intelligent people already know this, it isn’t news anymore, PS4 is the best gaming system period, xbone is good if you need to change tv channels or like apps.

  • What the hell man. Use the same screenshots I enjoy my PS4 as much as anyone else but you are not using the same screenshots. That battery indicator and exo ability show up on my PS4 game as well. Your picture shows it like it something tacky added on the Xbox One version it just fades after a second or two.

  • James Anthony

I just looked at four sites saying they look the same but PS4 frame rate had some problems. I wonder what these guy are trying to pull . Maybe another fight between gamers . Trust me on this PS4 will fix that little problem and the Xbox one runs and looks awesome. Dont feed into the bs. I got my friends copy for PS4 and I have my own for XB they look the same!

  • dem_derp

    SP Campaign

XB1: 1360 x 1080 when any action is going on, which is most of the time. 60fps most of the time, some very brief drops to 40s or low 50s. Adaptive V-Sync (screen tearing)

PS4: 1080p native, 58-60fps most of the time, some very brief drops to 40s or low 50s. Fully V-Synced (no screen tearing)

    Multiplayer

    XB1: 1360 x 1080 100% of the time, res scaling disabled, 60 FPS locked

    PS4: 1080p native, 60 FPS locked

    • Jecht_Sin

You forgot the tearing on Xbone MP. ^_^

  • KontryBoy706

Xbox has had “crushed blacks” since the 360. Only now is it that people realize crushed blacks and over shot high contrast doesn’t mean superior picture quality. It means and always has meant a loss in image quality especially in dark scenes. You can’t distinguish the difference in black levels.

  • Ricoh123

    For the noobs –

Rgb settings limited (the correct tv settings)
Rgb settings full (the correct monitor settings)

The xb1 has never suffered crushed blacks. Ever.

    The end.

    • dem_derp

Actually the issue is less if you set both your tv and xbox to limited.

      neogaf com/forum/showthread.php?t=921553

      • Ricoh123

If you play on a tv, correctly set the rgb range to limited, and set the picture settings properly, there are no crushed blacks.

It isn’t an issue, there is nothing to fix, nothing is broken.

It gets on my nerves that Sony fanboys try to suggest crushed blacks are an issue because you can MAKE it happen by setting the picture up incorrectly.

  • Goodacre

i find it crazy that MS hasn’t fixed the crushed black problem that the Xbone had had since launch. they fixed the over-sharpening filter but not this, odd.

    • Ricoh123

Because it doesnt have crushed blacks and there is nothing to fix.

You can darken the blacks by incorrectly setting rgb to full when playing on a tv. This will crush blacks for you.

The correct setting is limited. Full is for monitors.

Sony fanboys and people who dont know how to set the picture properly push this crushed black thing. It doesn’t exist.

    • dem_derp

The crushed blacks issue exists on any Xbox game upscaled to 1080p and can’t be disabled.

The oversharpening filter on upscaling was disabled but crushed blacks remain..

      • Ricoh123

        False fanboy lies.

    • corvusmd

Because it’s not a real issue…it’s a fake one blown out of proportion by desperate fanboys trying to find something to complain about. Typically spawned from poor capturing or not properly adjusting the picture which can be done on your tv and/or by selecting you color scheme and/or PC output in the Xbox Settings. Anyone saying this is an issue is someone that hasn’t spent any real time with an Xbox

  • Dangerousjo 1985

Im playing it on xb1 but they both look amazing so just go enjoy it.

  • jacksjus

Do MP visuals even matter? Do you really have time to admire the environment during a match?

I think SP visuals are far more important and even then you have little time to focus on the details.

  • corvusmd

Such fanboy phrasing. If one console wins SP and the other wins MP….why ONLY mention the one that wins MP? Has that even ever been done before? Which BTW, PS4 does have better Res on both, but X1 has better FPS on both according to the comparisons I’ve seen (yes even MP, just less dramatic). So “better” in this case depends on if you prefer Res or FPS. For this game (and about 99% of others…I’d go with FPS). Hell just controller preference is enough to make that obsolete.

    • dem_derp

Wrong, it does not have better FPS in multiplayer.

      • corvusmd

Yes it does, read the article

        • dem_derp

Stop spreading fanboy lies, ignorance, trolling, and blind hate. All of your lies and blind hatred only make you look deranged and sick to normal, sane people. You are sick and need help.

  • Kate Briga

Heh,.. just seams that the fact it crushes blacks always make colors and thing pop more ,.. (And I actually like such high contrast image,..(it is irrational,.. but the fact is that you can play with Tv settings to do that on PS4,..if you really like it,..(Like me) on xbox one you cannot avoid totally broken gamma curve)

And yeh,.. hope this image discussion stops,.. you can clearly see how much better and clearer a native 1080p image is even when you scale only horizontally,.. especially in motion where the detail and aliasing is really noticeable)

So yeah PS4 version is technically better,.. I am so loving 1:1 pixel image and mapping ,..– but then again I sit pretty damn close to my tv,..

    • corvusmd

OF COURSE you are allowed to have your preference, but I play 4-6 feet away from a 65′ 1080p 240hz Samsung LED….I’ve done the tests myself between games on my PS4 and my X1…if you’re saying there is a huge difference, you’re seeing what you want to see.

      • Kate Briga

maybe your eyes are impaired ,.. and I am not even kidding or trying to jab you,..

        • corvusmd

No, actually I have MUCH better than average eye-sight…which is weird cause both my parents and two of my brothers needed glasses, but every time I get my eyes checked (which is at least 2 times a year for work), my eye-sight is much better than average.

  • starscream1180

mine doesnt look that dark ..either way , get it for either console you like playing online with … and have fun … the graphics are great on both

    • corvusmd

Agreed, a lot of times when I look at comparisons online, I wonder if the people capturing the X1 version have heard of a contrast/brightness button. And you constantly hear this “crushed blacks” thing like it’s an actual thing that makes a difference (Hint, make your output setting “PC”…all fixed…you’re welcome). Most of the times differences can be resolved with using proper settings. However yes this game is much more fun than I expected it to be

      • albatrosMyster

It is an actual thing, since the blacks are crushed before they are sent to your TV the information in the darker part of the image is lost… forever.

On the other hand if you have proper color values you can adjust the brightness or sharpness of your TV to make it look like the blacks are crushed on the PS4 (or most 1080p games being played on the XB1)… basically, it screw up everyone, because if you have an XB1 and you adjusted your TV for regular 1080p games, the upscaled games will look “too dark”… this or if you adjusted while playing Sunset Over drive or some other sub 1080p game, the 1080p games/movies will look flat in comparison.

There is no “fix” for that.

    • Dave

Game looks absolutely fantastic on PS4, really proper next gen graphics. Faces are some of the best I’ve seen, but the eyes need more wok.

      • starscream1180

agreed , the faces do look nice butttttt kevin spacey looks weird as hell sometimes …lol

        • albatrosMyster

He has dead fish eyes! 🙁
          I cannot un-see the conan o’brien CoD bits…

          • starscream1180

            lmfao

  • Shu577 .

I guess the ps4 is the definitive console this gen.

    • starscream1180

      for resolution, yes.

but if youre into resolution pc’s can easily hit 1440p nowadays with a mid range card.

      • jacksjus

He said CONSOLES. He said nothing about a PC. Smh!

        • starscream1180

          I said pc’s, its called a comment … smh

          • jacksjus

Sure but one that was way off base and completely irrelevant to the convo. Smh!

          • awesome_farts

Didn’t you know, conversations on the internet don’t come with etiquette? ;p

          • starscream1180

considering most people on these sites start console wars over an article about” my little pony”.

          • awesome_farts

Of course, in society! But not on the internet, i find this environment amusing and interact freely. Only a nerd would get butthurt over online etiquette or lack their of lol!

And i do have awesome farts, impeccable perspiration, and an unlimited supply of excellent piss!

          • starscream1180

oh i dont know bc alienware now makes a wannabe console .. and im sure more will follow suit …

chip on your shoulder is that big huh

          • jacksjus

No it’s not a console it’s a gaming dedicated PC. What games will Alienware play? Will it play PC games or will it have its own software? Exactly.

Point was irrelevant as this discussion is about performance between two consoles.

          • starscream1180

dude youre not an internet cop …. youre upset about me giving another person advice…. if i wanted to mention spongebob square pants i can, you are noone.

you bring zero to this article except your opinion of what you perceive as irrelevent, nice job guy.

          • jacksjus

I figured you would lose your cool eventually. I had every right to comment just like you did. When you’re wrong you’re wrong. Learn to live with that.

            Peace!

          • starscream1180

            :::::slow clap ::::::

i agree you are entitled to tell me whatever you want , i didnt say you werent, just dont be surprised with my response … good day maam

    • corvusmd

Respectfully Disagree, my PS4 hasn’t been turned on in months (or whenever the PT demo came out). PS4 has the Res advantage more often than not, but that doesn’t make it “the definitive console”. Res is just one aspect of console gaming, and as we are seeing more and more and more, it means less and less and less. Esp considering in this game we are talking about, Digital Foundry (who is usually considered “god” in these things), actually said that visual wise you were almost never able to tell the difference visually between the two because the Res scalling on X1 was hidden very well, and the FPS on PS4 dipped much more often and much more dramatically.

I think the idea of better res being the definition of “definitive” needs to die. IMO there are SEVERAL things more important, namely Customer/Console support, games, console UI, Network, controller, and even achievement system/innovation…which despite no love loss to PS4…I feel all those areas go hands down to X1, and I would trade ANY one of them for the “res advantage” in ANY game that we have seen this gen. Esp considering that in at least 95% of them, you couldn’t tell which is which in a blind test.

      • starscream1180

same here , i prefer the x1 for online gaming … i like my ps4 but its jst not up to par as a whole and psn isnt even close to xbl imo … but again thats just me.

X1 Never dropped into the 40’s

          • James Anthony

I might have seen the same video. You really cant tell on both consoles

          • albatrosMyster

it’s only because DF’s frame rate counter does not count screen tearing as “frame drops”.

a screen tear is what happens when you cannot render a full frame before it’s time to show it on the TV and v-sync is disabled… as an XB1 owners you may be used to this effect by now, the whole image becomes wobbly and you have a line somewhere on the screen that breaks the image.

a game that runs at 60 most of the time with a few drops (only in SP) should not make this sacrifice, just like they did on the PS4).

          • corvusmd

You seem too emotional about this, but DF said there were two screen tears the ENTIRE test and they weren’t noticeable at all, just like the frame rate issues. So can people stop crying about this already and just play games again?

Now is the best time for gaming EVER, but gamers are so spoiled that now all we do is bitch and whine about THE most insignificant aspect of gaming like it’s the most important.

          • dem_derp

            Complete and total LIE.

          • Marco Carranza

How you know the fps on a console?

          • corvusmd

Comparison videos…unless it gets bad enough that it effects gameplay.

        • corvusmd

You love copy and pasting your numbers…and somehow still got them wrong. Read the digital foundry article again…esp the part where it says if favors the X1 version because the res difference isn’t noticeable and that you never notice a single screen tear. Crushed Blacks is a fake argument from someone that has never played an X1 and realizes that it’s bull…it’s more like “I can’t find anything REAL wrong with the X1 version…..um uh uh….’Crushed blacks’!!!”

Well for your sake, I really really really hope the PS4 version of AW out sells the X1 version by way more than 2-1 or else, not only will YOU look stupid, but it will also prove that your last straw of “res differences” will officially mean nothing

          • dem_derp

            SP Campaign

            It is locked at 60
fps on multiplayer according to DF and Activision. That is not a
“lighting and shader” difference but just the normal Crushed Blacks
issue that is present on all upscaled Xbox games. That can be replicated
on any display by increasing the contrast or sharpness.

You are completely wrong and blatantly Lying.

            ..

        • Ricoh123

          For your information –

When v-sync is enabled and fps can’t maintain at 60,you get microstuttering. That’s why this game isn’t as smooth on the ps4 as the xb1.

        • TJ

i seen the video & even tho COD been trash for a long time….The PS4 dropped to 40 more than the X1 SMH

          • dem_derp

They BOTH drop to the 40s at the same point in the video and nowhere else. PS4 to 42, Xbox to 44.

      • datdude

You must be one of the two percent of people who own both consoles who prefer the xbone. Congrats on being in the minority…hope you’re not lonely on xbot island. Sony’s roster of the best first party devs on the planet will send you a care basket starting next February with Bloodborne, and continue all the way through to December with Uncharted…with gems like The Order:1886, No Man’s Sky, Rime, Wild, The Tomorrow Children, Until Dawn, Alienation, Hellblade, Everybody’s Gone to the Rapture, The Witness, etc. etc. etc. in the intervening months. Oh, and don’t forget to check out the playstation experience in December when some more of Sony’s unparalleled first party studios will reveal what they have been working on…hopefully we hear from Sony Santa Monica, Quantic Dream, Guerilla, Media Molecule, Sony Bend….I could go on, but I’m going to leave you alone on that island for now.

        • corvusmd

Clearly you are offended. However, you even started off by saying that I own both consoles(which btw how does that make ME the fanboy on a lonely island?). I won’t miss anything that comes to PS4…I have one. That being said, the list you provided touches upon why PS4 is not my primary console. They have MORE exclusives, but much less that I care about. I do want to play Uncharted, and I’m interested in Guerillas Open world game ( I love open world games), other than that, I might pick up Order and Bloodborne if there is a lull sometime (not sure when that will be), but if I didn’t own a PS4 I wouldn’t miss them at all. No Man’s Sky (and Vanashing of Ethan Carter…the other indie on PS4 I care about) are by no means exclusive at all. Hellblade is also not exclusive…the others I have no interest in and I’ll be slammed with enough other games that I don’t care to get interested in them. Listing off developers for Sony does absolutely nothing except establish that you are a fanboy that assumes that Sony devs can do no wrong…you’re assuming already that they will pump out gold and you don’t even know what games they are working on…not to mention that so far every PS4 exclusive has been a disappointment compared to what it was supposed to be. Sony will be fine, but you’re assuming way too much.

As far as being the 2%…I make my own decisions based on the facts I see, no what is popular…or else I would listen to Justin Bieber, Watch Dancing with the Stars, and watch Soccer. However, based on what I have seen you’re dead wrong anyway. If anything it’s the opposite. 100% of the people that I know that own both prefer the X1, the vast majority of people online I meet that own both prefer the X1. PS4 and Wii U are fine machines, which is why I got them (that and nostalgia), but sorry, the X1 has proven to me to be the best all around console at the moment, with the most games I’m excited for.

          • James Anthony

Well said! I love them both. Nothng wrong with being a diplomat and liking both consoles.

        • Dylan Harris

you sound like a kid, grow up.

      • ImOnaDrugCalledSheen

        Respectfully Disagree

      • albatrosMyster

I don’t know, I fins this sideways upscaling comes down to about the same level of blurriness than regular 900p, just not in the same way, you certainly do not have more details in the end.

The more I read the xbox “owners” comments in these article the more I think they’re 1 or two things:
1 – Some are obviously paid to love this thing so much
2 – MS has successfully started a cult, just like Apple and the followers are ferocious!

Those “benefits” you name are dubious for many people:
1 – Not everyone cares or play online often enough to even care for possible PSN issues (I would argue that they’re not a big problem anyway, certainly not like they have been very early in the PS3’s life span, we are talking about before 2009 here).
2 – As far as console UI goes, enjoy your tiles, I prefer a straightforward / snappy OS on my console.
3 – What innovations? if the achievements system is the last thing they innovated on … find something better, they borrowed the Wii’s 3D avatar system, the whole idea of having a controller with two analog sticks, the two sets of bumper buttons, etc. I find it interesting that some people seem to think MS invented console gaming :-/

Anyway… previous xbox systems were interesting because they performed well, they got and deserved respect for it… now this one does now have it, everything else is kind of moot bickering.
