Catherine Sequel Won’t Be Happening Anytime Soon According To Atlus

Fans of the Japanese cult title Catherine have some bad news coming their way, it looks like the game won’t be getting a sequel despite it’s critical and financial acclaim.

When asked in a comment on the Playstation Blog whether Catherine would be getting a sequel, PR Manager at Atlus John Hardin had the following to say:

There’s nothing planned, and I don’t think the game’s endings set it up for any kind of sequel (maybe it’d have to be a prequel or spiritual successor kind of thing?) but yeah, it’s awesome and totally would be cool.

Catherine hit stores in Japan in 2011 and came westward in 2012 for the PS3 and Xbox 360. Catherine went on to sell over 500,000 units in just Japan by the end of 2011 proving it to be a huge success.

The game holds a 83% score on Metacritic with some even calling it one of the most innovating puzzle games this generation. Catherine was developed by the famed Persona team who are supposedly working on Persona 5 right now.

If there is a sequel, I’d imagine the block puzzle gameplay would be moved to a space setting to accommodate for the true neutral ending (the one that makes the most amount of sense as far as a sequel goes).

The relationship system would likely be removed altogether as well as the game’s name, unless the Catherines return.

I loved this game so much, got really caught up in it. Maybe they could think of building further games based on the dreams the other characters had.

I think Catherine is unbelievably creative, entertaining, challenging, and thought provoking. To deny the world a sequel would be a crime.

    • I wholeheartedly agree, the game was really something out of the ordinary.

Spiritual Successor would be great like what they do with FF, new cast and story. Just keep only the gods/angels the same and have a different Succubus. Change up the dream world to fit the new character. I love the art style of this game more then anything else. If only more adult game were made like anime. God how great would that be, I mean even a game like Zelda would look great with Art design like this. But back on topic, I would love to see this become a series of games, call it Golden Playhouse and then we can go from there. And an actual anime of this game would be awesome too.
