Halo 5: Guardians Is The Worst Selling Mainline Halo In Japan, Sales Compared To Past Halo Games

Halo 5: Guardians was released on Xbox One in Japan last week and we have finally received the result of the total sales of the game in its debut week. As expected, the game was the worst selling mainline Halo game since the series first made its debut on Xbox platform. However, Halo was definitely a popular enough IP in the past, that managed to sell reasonable numbers and also helped in selling Xbox hardware.

Halo 5: Guardians opened at Number 11 in the Top 20 software list in Japan for its debut week. It sold 7,455 copies in total during its debut week and before its launch in Japan, Xbox One sales almost doubled from ~440 to more than a thousand consoles sold.

Interestingly, if we take a look at the sales data of Halo series in Japan, it has done really well in the past so it is surprising to see that a mainline entry in the series sold less than 10k, when it used to average around 30k.

It is worth pointing out that these numbers for Halo 5: Guardians are taken from Media Create, while the rest of the sales data is from Famitsu. The hardware sales of Xbox One also stand at a paltry 57,863 consoles sold during the launch of Halo 5: Guardians in Japan. For comparison, Xbox 360 had sold  415,491 units before the launch of Halo 3.

Game Name Platform Debut Week
Halo Xbox 31,041
Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary Xbox 360 11, 238
Halo History Pack (Platinum Coll) Xbox 4,600
Halo 2 Xbox 29, 235
Halo 3 Xbox 360 61,143
Halo 3 (Platinum Coll) Xbox 360 2,500
Halo Wars Xbox 360 14,168
Halo 3: ODST Xbox 360 33,020
Halo: Reach Xbox 360 38, 644
Halo 4 Xbox 360 31, 467
Halo: The Mast Chief Collection Xbox One 4,667
Halo 5: Guardians Xbox One 7,455

Halo 5: Guardians also had one of the weakest opening for the series in the UK, so it is not something that is limited to a specific region. It seems like the bad word of mouth from Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Halo 4 has ruined and damaged the reputation of the brand. It remains to be seen what affect it will have on the sales of Halo 5: Guardians in US, since Halo typically sells the most in US.

Halo 5: Guardians was released on October 27th exclusively on the Xbox One. It was developed by 343i Industries, whose first game was Halo 4 on the Xbox 360.

The title of this article is pure trash. I hope the few extra clicks made sensationalising news to new lows was worth it.

Considering that Xbox brand has never been a commercial success in Japan, how can a title which makes the Japanese top 20 software list for it’s debut week be a negative for the Brand, the Platform or the game itself?

  • aaron

who cares what Japan likes anyway. We are talking about a culture that buys soiled girls underwear from vending machines and eats cats and dogs. Sick of hearing about Japan and Xbox. Japan loves crap made in Japan, the only time they support American business is when they fly home from America with American cigarettes.

  • Michael Norris

Only did something like 150million but that excludes digital sells. Also the Xbox brands sells worse than total shit in Japan so this article makes no sense.

  • Kfal Balli

Worst selling xbox console in japan = worst selling halo. It doesn’t take rocket science to figure that out. This is a bad article.

Pretty sure they made your exact point. Not sure how that classifies as a bad article.

      • Kfal Balli

Because it was pointless to state what is already obvious.

  • Jack White

Haha what a joke of an article, clearly you didn’t even attempt to look into digital sales…..this game did $400 million it’s first week, whoever wrote this is a clown

    • Jack White

$400 million in sales making it the best selling halo game ever I might add

      • Chris W

Not really. Those numbers include console and other hardware sales. This is most likely the worst selling halo game in history.

        • Sammy Z

How dare you cloud their outrage with facts!

    • J.j. Barrington

      Including hardware and accessories.

  • Joshua Pirog

Well…it’s on a next-gen system but the graphics look like the game was made in 2008. You play as Master Chief for about an hour and it’s a horrible single-player story to have to go through.

    • Kfal Balli

What’s your gamertag since you’ve played it?

      • Joshua Pirog

why? To try and prove I played it? Because you like it you want to troll? Smh.

        • Kfal Balli

No apparently you’re the troll. Commenting on things you have not played or have interest in. That was my point.

          • Joshua Pirog

I know that was your point. To try and prove I didn’t play it. But why? Because you like it? Who cares? Not everyone is going to agree on a game. I played it, I own it, it’s getting traded in for store credit toward Star Wars Battlefront. Sorry I didn’t like it. But considering the low sales in Japan and the UK, it seems some gamers are smartening up to the fact this series isn’t all that. It reminds me of how technically flawed Halo 3 was.

          • Kfal Balli

            Lol towards Battlefront. Have fun

          • Joshua Pirog

I will, while you continue to troll people about games you don’t take the time to play because you’re too busy being the know it all of the intrawebz. Lmfao. Enjoy, loser.

          • Kfal Balli

Thanks for the insults. Grow up kid.

          • Carte Desi

We’re still waiting for that gamertag.

            proof or STFU.

          • Joshua Pirog

There’s only one thing worse than being a troll, and that’s being the bitch of a troll. Interesting life choice there. Have no interest in sharing my gamertag with strangers. You don’t have to believe me.

          • Zombeek Dragmire

            lying lol

Besides for battlefront you are funny battlefront has gone downhill in the same way you are talking about halo

Enjoy your battlefield copy getting gouged for dlc

          • Joshua Pirog

So let’s get this straight. I say Halo 5 sucks, Zombeek and Kfal get offended. It’s “not ok”. But then to be hypocrites, you both say Battlefront is going to suck and that statement is supposed to be ok? Typical internet morons, only YOUR opinion matters. Lmao. And yeah Zombi…Halo neeeeeeever has DLC….God you’re dumb.

          • Josh

Halo 5 will have free DLC, this has already been stated by 343i. Next they never said battlefront ‘will’ fail, they are saying it ‘is’ failing in the same way you describe the halo franchise. Next them asking for proof of you playing the game makes sense since you bash the campaign in the most stereotypical way some other reviewers have. It begs one to guess you either read someone else say it and formulated your opinion around that. OR, you watched someone else play it and exaggerated the issue (Being a short campaign). With that being said, I played Halo 5 campaign from beginning to end on Legendary, it took me a LONG fucking time doing it solo. The game easily lasted me beyond 15 hours, and had a mediocre story. I may not have been satisfied with it, but it was not as bad as many people say it to be. I have also played plenty of multiplayer and can say with confidence it has one of the most reliable matchmaking in franchise history.

Oh and my Gamertag is “Almighty Gates” If you wish to see if I’m lying… I have played all of the Halos, and every Halo game I have done to perfection (Achievements) aside from Halo 4 and MCC, this includes Halo Wars. In Halo 2 my ranks were beyond 45 on all playlists, Halo 3 my rank was If I remember correctly, Brigadier General (4), I may have moved into General near the end of Halo 3. I have played more Halo than I can assume you have, or ever will play and can assure you, that you do not know what you are talking about.
There were several instances that Bungie gave out Free DLC in the form of 1 or 2 maps, and now Halo 5 will have many free DLC packs, how many I do not know, but its a welcomed gift to Halo fans.

          • Zombeek Dragmire

well I have battlefront now and it does suck ass with all the dlc tacked on. it half a game for $60 dollars

Plus as I said halo has the dlc for free this time its why they are doing the whole warzone card pack thing so they can still make money.

Pot calling the kettle black only YOUR opinion matters too

          • Joshua Pirog

I’m glad you’re still trolling my comments 2 months later. It let’s me know 2 things. You have no life, and I really got under your skin. I’m content.

          • Zombeek Dragmire

            yawn. another two months
