Sony bend discusses Days Gone’s protagonist and his anti-hero persona

Last week at E3, Sony Bend treated fans to a post-apocalyptic, open-world adventure, Days Gone. The world is infested by hoards of pandemic-affected zombie-like creatures, known as ‘Freakers.’ In a recent post on Playstation blog, Bend’s creative director, Ron Allen, discusses the protagonist, and shares a few details about his hard-ridden past.

Days Gone explores the story of Deacon St. John, and how he’s adopted his survival instincts on the road, as he was previously part of a motorcycle gang. Ron is keen on emphasising that Deacon is a “dangerous guy” as well as a “broken man”, as he seems to have lost everything, from his family to his motorcycle gang.

“If you didn’t know from the kutt on his back, in his previous life, Deacon St. John was the MC of a motorcycle gang. He learned a lot from being part of that group, and that’s helped him survive.

He’s a dangerous guy. He’s using his skills where he can — his appetite for violence and mayhem help him excel at his job.”

Because of his persona, Deacon seamlessly fits into the setting; the world is harsh, but he has learnt the necessary skills needed to kill, steal, and survive. What’s more, Deacon’s motorcycle plays a ‘huge, huge part’ in the game. It’s his means of traveling across the difficult terrain, and his only escape plan if he happens to encounter the aforementioned freakers.

“A lot of us are motorcycle riders. It’s a really vibrant culture. It’s often associated with criminals, mayhem, and violence, but it’s also about brotherhood and family. Because Deacon has suffered so much loss he holds on to that aspect of his past, and cherishes those relationships. It’s about him finding himself, because he no longer has his motorcycle gang.”

We’re keen to see how Bend’s latest upcoming title differentiates itself from the other zombie-infested games. From what we’ve seen at the E3 demo, it looked extremely promising, especially the zombie hoards!

The game is set to release for the PS4, although a specific released date has not been announced. Are you excited for Days Gone? Let us know in the comments below!
