Uncharted for the PS4 was revealed at the PS4 launch event last year. The reveal trailer was rather mysterious and offered no real insight on which direction the new game is heading on. Shortly after its reveal, earlier this year, the creative lead of Uncharted, Amy Henning left Naughty Dog followed by the game director Justin Richmond. Since both of these were crucial part of the development team for Uncharted, people were worried that the development might be affected. Sony offered a comment later denying any issues with the development and confirmed that the development of Uncharted for PS4 won’t be affected by recent departures.
In a latest interview to GameInformer, co-presidents of Naughty Dog, Christophe Balestra and Evan Wells shed further light on the development situation of the new Uncharted.
It was confirmed that Nathan Drake will return for the new Uncharted. The new project lead were also confirmed, and now The Last of Us creative lead consisting of Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley, will take charge of this new Uncharted. According to Christophe Balestra and Evan Wells, despite the recent set of departures, they have been making “enormous progress” on the new Uncharted. They further explained that both Neil Druckmann and Bruce Straley will utilize their experience of creating The Last of Us to develop the new Uncharted for the PS4, making changes as they deem necessary.
Christophe Balestra: A little bit. They have to fall in love with the game they’re making, right? They’ll make the changes that they think are right. They’re going to have to adjust what they’ve got and make it what they think is right for this game. There are some changes, obviously, that they will be making.
Evan Wells: They also had a lot of really good experience with the development of The Last of Us and some production philosophies that they’re able to incorporate into the production of Uncharted. That’s benefitted the team a lot as well.
This is definitely reassuring since if The Last of Us is any indication, the next Uncharted is definitely going to be something worth talking about.
