Sony has announced a new sales milestone for the PlayStation 4 today ahead of their CES 2018 press conference. The sales figure provided by Sony confirm that PS4 has now sold through 5.9 million units during this Holiday season for a cumulative total of 73.6 million units as of December 31st, 2017. The console sales have been steady so far, even if a slight decline in hardware sales this holiday, from 6.2 million to 5.9 million units.
PlayStation 4 is on pace to be the fastest and best selling Sony console so far. The console is quickly outpacing the sales of the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 1, but it has still a long way to go to catch up to the PlayStation 2, which was the fastest and best selling Sony console to date.
Sony has also announced that more than 55 million units of software was sold for the PlayStation 4 during this Holiday, which is up from last year. The software sales counted here are for retail channels and digital sales on the PlayStation Store. The total software sales for the PlayStation 4 now stand at 645 million units as of December 31st, 2017.
PlayStation 4 is the first Sony system to have received a mid-generation upgrade in the form of a PlayStation 4 Pro. It offers support for 4K and HDR on top of the improved hardware. This was supplemented by the PlayStation 4 Slim, which is the cheaper variant and the default model for the PlayStation 4.
