The PLEX app is now available on the PS3 and PS4

Good news for Playstation owners wanting to squeeze some more multimedia capability out of their consoles, the much awaited PLEX app has arrived on both the Playstation 3 and Playstation 4. We covered how useful PLEX can be for playing movies, music and other media in the past, and even did an article on how to use it on the PS4 but its great to finally have an official app.

PLEX for those not aware is a media streaming program that allows users to play media that their device might not be able to play. For example the PS4 cannot play MKV files natively, but it can using PLEX as all of the processing is done on a PC and the output is streamed to the PS4.

In a post on their official blog, they revealed that they’ve been working on the Playstation apps from even before the Xbox One version which released a while ago. App is currently available on the European and Asian Playstation Stores, the US release is coming but a release date wasn’t revealed. US Playstation owners wanting their PLEX fix can still use it via the browser using the guide here.

The first release is however unfortunately limited to PLEX Pass users:

All the same limitations apply with this first release: Plex Pass only, video only, library only. Support for music, photos and channels will follow, as will the ability for non-Plex Pass users to purchase the app.

Are you a PLEX user? Let us know your thoughts on the app in the comments below.

I was excited to find PLEX for the PS4 until I realized it was a for pay service. If it ever begins to function as it does on my SmartTV, no pay, then it will be a welcome addition.
