PS3 Mandatory Firmware Update 4.66 Released [Update]

PS3-Logo

Sony has officially updated the PS3 firmware to 4.66. This is a mandatory firmware update which is required to be able to connect online on the PlayStation 3. The PS Vita and PlayStation 4 received a brand new update last month and now it seems to be the turn of the PlayStation 3.

In case you want to download this update, you can download it online from here. It is about 44 MB in size, which is rather small for a firmware update.

To update it through USB, follow the instructions below.

  1. Downlod the update file from the official PlayStation website.
  2. Create a new folder on the root of your USB drive, rename it to PS3.
  3. Create another folder inside the PS3 folder, rename it to Update.
  4. Rename the Update file to PS3Updat.pup and copy to the update folder.
  5. On your PS3, go to Settings > System Update and select “Update via Storage Media”.

We will update this article once a changelog is available for this update.

Update: PlayStation EU Community Manager Chris Owen has revealed the changelog, which is just pointing towards a simple stability update.

System software stability during use of some features has been improved.

Have you updated to this latest firmware? Let us know in the comments below.

oh , and funnily enough after speaking with Playstation help desk, they had no idea either….
“you can send in and we’ll try to fix it ” ……..was their answer. “How much …?” …”£120 plus postage”
    NO THANK YOU

  • crawfmonkey

I tried to update after being told I had to update to 4.66 and it looked like it was working.
I then got “an error has occured” and that is the end of my PS3!!
I now cannot sign into the playstation network and play/watch anything.
I have taken to 2 different specialists who say they have no idea what has happened…
THANK YOU SONY.! I will not be buying any more of your products….

I had the same issue, Have a 4k Sony TV that was working fine with the ps3, then did update 4.66 and after the update i had no picture, just sound.. after doing the holding down on the power and plugging and unplugging nothing worked, but it worked fine on my tv in bedroom as brought it to the living room to test.

What fixes this issue is that you must take the ps3 out of standby mode by switching it off and the tv also and powering it all back up and it all worked again.. So good luck for everyone else who has this common problem

  • This update is a PS3 bricker. Don’t install it.

    • After I installed the update, my PlayStation became “as slow as hunger” (it’s an italian manner of saying, which means: really really slow)…I bet there is no way to downgrade…

  • Lo Cruz

I had issues on PSN services (for trophies etc) not connecting to Facebook through acct management… But now it works after the update!

  • Sonyburnedmyhousedown

I updated and immediately noticed my house caught on fire. Lousy Sony Pigs!

PS4 is the leading console of the country so there’s obviously no reason for them to “do this for no reason” -.- Calm the fuck down. It’s not like you had anything better to do with your lives anyways. “Wasting our time.” You act like you had plans. Ten minutes of your day isn’t going to ruin your lives. STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT 10 MINUTES OF DOWNLOADING A SURPRISE

      This is about PS3, shill!

  • Billybob

That is not the right file. The right file would be almost 200mb. Thanks for wasting our time.

  • Matt Hinman

I updated successfully. Now there’s no picture on my tv.

sucks, sony is probably adding/updating their restrictions to annoy people, i have to say that this being a mandatory update and it not having ANY info at all is a bit suspicious to me, specially with ps4 being out, they probably did not reach sale goal and just want to slow down/ add bugs to the ps3, so you would replace it, trust me, there is nothing no one wont do for money.

Sony is a company, not an immature 13 year old girl. Jesus.

  • Cody Minder

What’s the point of the update?

    • I am Sam

I do believe he answered the question “We will update this article once a changelog is available for this update.”
Just like this question… Why do people ask questions that have already been answered, and ask a question to something that someone doesn’t know yet…?

        Winning!

        • The Unknown

Hey Brah, see how long since he posted before Sam? Brah you need glasses!!! BTW I am Sam is beating you.

          • Cody Minder

Hahahaha you guys xD yeah I was up all night and I couldn’t find ANYTHING for 4.66 information then this popped up and there was literally no info on this post except for….

Then there’s updates that the users replying to this article have to manually check themselves. But no worries for the confusion. xD

      • Cody Minder

Sam the article was already updated after my post. It was very brief. But in general all of these ps3 updates honestly turn the the system into a brick just so we are forced to buy a PS3. I noticed significant changes since the next gen release. But thanks for the reply. (:

    • To be able to connect to the online part of the PS3. A better question would be is should I buy a WiiU

      • Maxime Tomei

GameBoy, you should buy a GameBoy!

        • SwagBoy17

          Hell yeah

      • Cody Minder

Yeah that’s a better choice if you’re worried about spending money xD

The general Sony BS : “System stability”. Their firmwares must be total crap that they get updated with SOOO many firmware updates with the same point.

    • bobdude11

To disable the network component and force everyone to buy the Xbox One
