Shadow of the Tomb Raider Development Budget Rivals A Hollywood Blockbuster

Square Enix is releasing the last part of the new Tomb Raider trilogy this September. Shadow of the Tomb Raider is the name of the last game in the series and it is out on September 14th. The game is currently confirmed for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.

In an interview with GameIndustry, Eidos Montreal boss David Anfossi has revealed some details behind the development budget and marketing behind Shadow of the Tomb Raider. It explains why it is getting harder to see such large scale big budget games considering how expensive they are to make for the current generation.

“Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and other different AAA single-player games, cost $75 million to $100 million, and that’s production only; it’s close to $35 million on the promotion. So there’s definitely a pressure. We cannot avoid it. But, at the same time, for us to have these incubation projects and to try small things… that gives us the opportunity to test, prepare and secure some stuff, and remove some risk.”

The success of games like Fortnite and PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds also has brought in new audience to gaming. Fortnite in particular has become something of a cultural icon with popular celebrities playing it. It also makes a huge amount of money for its publisher, Epic Games. It it not surprising to see why some publishers are getting cold feet when it comes to releasing more single player games that have to sell in the millions just to recoup their development cost.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be out on September 14th for the PS4, Xbox One and PC.
