The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt: Final Build vs. Pre-Release Trailer Comparison

witcher-3-12312

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt is just a few weeks away from its official release now. It is currently being previewed by various media outlets and as the game went gold a few weeks ago, we are also getting to see more footage from the final build of the game.

The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt has also received some criticism against its graphics over the course of its development, where the game was unable to match the look of its early footage. Although the final build does seem to match most of the pre-release footage. You can check out one such comparison in the screenshots below. The comparison is between the final build versus the VGX and Sword of Destiny trailer.

The most noticeable difference is of course the lighting in each of the scene. While the general graphics remain the same, the lighting has been changed, probably to meet the art direction of the game. It could have been different to show a better view in the trailers compared to the final build. There are also some slight tweaks including different characters and armor.

What’s obvious from the above comparison is that the game retains its look very well from all of the pre-release footage. The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt releases May 19 for the Playstation 4, Xbox One and PC.

Let us know what you think about this screenshot comparison in the comments below.

I’m going to echo the existing comments: did you seriously try to compare identical scenes at different times of the day!!!??? There is no doubt the console seems to look slightly inferior to what they had shown, but I think our eyes were trained to what the PC build looked like since Xbox even showed us that footage while advertising for their version. Regardless, the game looks beautiful and is a blast to play! Win.

  • Mark Twyning

But seriously does anyone expect promo vids to look like the actual game footage, besides the game is awesome.

  • Mark Twyning

The difference is like night and day…………. 🙂

  • JY Yew

Well… at least the hair is better in the final build thanks to hairworks.
well overhyping is pretty common for AAA games, s its not a big surprise. the witcher 3’s final build is still very good, and i will buy it soon, and if the graphics stayed the way it was, a gtx660 wont be able to run the game at low at even 30fps. the devs will never fully optimize their games like consoles because nvidia probably paid them to make it not too optimized so that nvidia gets to sell more of its new gpus.
hope that there will be texture mods though (witcher 3 did not really make use of vram at ultra. they coud have used more vram and gave us better textures

  • the differences in the demos and the actual game are huge. Scenes and time or weather has nothing to do with the difference in lighting as other FX. Who play the game at any setting and compare with the gameplays of 2014 can easily see it.

  • Samuel Archangel Williams

You mean different scenes shot at different times of the day within the game. As well as as picture 2 actually being linked to picture 7 and Picture 1 being linked to picture 8.

    • there isn’t different nothing, is downgraded, change the time or whatever and look, open the FUCKING eyes. They wiped the lighting quality and other effects.

  • lk kara

It’s not even the same screens……………. you genius.

  • Great Job on comparing screenshots with different Time of day. These REAAAAALLLY Help show the difference.

    Khurram you’re a fucking genius

  • PixelOmen

It’s pretty tough to compare them when they’re all at different times of day. This is pointless.

  • Dynasty2021

Thanks for ruining another one consoles.

    • Jecht_Sin

On the contrary. Consoles will give CDPR the funding to make many more brilliant games! Also don’t forget that the PC games must also run on the majority of crappy PCs shown in the Steam statistics..

  • Since you aren’t comparing the same scene at the same time, this doesn’t make any sense at all.

    • Joshua Pirog

Don’t worry, they’ll have an article a day after the game is released showing how the PC version is the best version. That’s the entire point to this site. Bash consoles, push PC. God forbid someone care about ….gameplay..

    • PeregrineX7

Exactly. Different scenes, different lighting. Details often appear more noticeable in darker scenes, so of course the older build looks better.
Frankly, there was no downgrade, only an artistic shift. If you look at the announcement trailer vs the trailer now, there was a clear shift in style. It does not mean the game looks worse, only different.
BUT MORE IMPORTANTLY, the game is going to look fantastic on ALL systems. People will gasp at how good one or the other looks, but at the end of the day everyone is going to have the same amount of enjoyment out of what looks to be amazingly satisfying combat.

Let us all stop comparing one system to another, and rather get exited about how good the Witcher: Wild Hunt is going to be!!!

      • True. Can’t wait to play it.

      • THE DOWNGRADE IS HUGE, WHO DENIES IS A FANBOY. I’M PLAYING THE GAME AND ISN’T THE SAME AS THEY SHOWED IN DEMOS, THE LIGHTING IS DIFFERENT BECAUSE IS DOWNGRADED MORE THAN ANYTHING, ISN’T A DIFFERENT TIME, HOW COULD IT BE IF IT HAPPENS INDOORS AND IN EVERY PLACE THE DOWNGRADE IS PRESSENT BY THE LESSER LIGHTING QUALITY AND OTHER FX. AND YOPU STOP TELLING OTHER WHAT TO DO, CDPR LIED AND WILL LIE EVER AS THERE IS FANBOYS TO BUY THEIR LIES. I TOOK THEIR MASK OFF, I WAS A FAN OF CDPR BUT NO MORE AFTER THIS AND THEIR BEHAVIOR. THE GAME IS OK, BUT CDPR IS NOT. PC GAMERS DESERVE MORE THAN THIS SHIT. THEY WOULD BE NOTHING WITHOUT THEM.

        • PeregrineX7

I think you left your caps lock on.

        • PeregrineX7

Oh, and also, YOU ARE RIGHT, I WAS WRONG.
When I made that comment above, it was before a lot of the more substantial evidence was revealed. I still stand by my statement for the evidence in this article, but the newer comparisons convinced me that there was a downgrade. Also, CDPR admitted it themselves.
I don’t blame them though. They are a tiny team (only 230 for the ENTIRE company, not just on game dev. Most AAA games have thousands of devs) and they were unable to get the game to run well, even on PC. They had to cut features on all systems to get the game to work. However, PC was hurt the most because consoles did hold it back. CDPR did not have a team big enough to create 3 different games for each system, so they had to pull back on PC graphics in order to finish it in time for release (it had been delayed too much at that point). Also, CDPR could not tell us about this before becuase of their marketing agreement with Microsoft. Don’t blame CDPR for this. They had no choice. Blame microsoft if you are going to blame anyone.
Also, don’t say the game is just ok, just becuase you are angry about the graphics. Graphics are not that important to make a good game, and this game is amazing. Denying that disproves your entire argument.
Fortunately for us PC gamers, Mods are already making the game look better. I am playing with a SweetFX mod installed which improves the graphics a lot by adding contrast that makes it look more like it did in the 2013 trailer.

Oh yeah, BTW using all Caps lock just makes you look imature. Hate to say it, but it is true. You are giving the PC community a bad name.

        • PeregrineX7

Oh, and one final thing, the new update today improves textures. CDPR will continue to improve PC graphics with time. They just needed to get the game out on release date. Now they can improve it without pressure. And like their previous two games, it is very likely that in just a few months we could see a free enhanced edition update just for PC.
In short, be patient. CDPR is still a fantastic company, and they do care about their community, even if they are by contract not allowed to necessarily express that.

  • PIRATE or NINJA

wtf how can you compare screens when its night and day difference literally in them……. is this a joke or are you that desperate for hits

  • Sunny

Lol we can’t really view the screenshot compare on mobile view of site :s

  • Mats Leven

    final version without darkness felling

  • Dirkster_Dude

It looks good so I don’t care.

  • poYar

    It not final version yet.

    • Thad Vanity

Do you know what “Gold” means?

      • PIRATE or NINJA

it means they sold certain amount of preorders…not that its final build

        • jmmy

Eh, no its not. In game production Gone Gold means the code is finalized and ready for printing. In the music buisniss on the other hand, it would mean certain sales

        • Thad Vanity

How about you Google “Gold Master” or “Release to Manufacturing”?

          Eyyyyyy? You might learn something!

But for now. Your wrong. Deal With It.

          • PIRATE or NINJA

            you are late, why bother

          • Thad Vanity

            I enjoy your stupidity…. 😀

          • PIRATE or NINJA

o ok, you are one of those really sad people that get off on making fun of people online over minor things. look someone made a mistake over something that is of no consequence. lets go out of our way for 3 days to show everyone how much time i have for this pathetic quest……….

  • Mart

And who exactly stated that this new footage is from the final build?
Nice clickbait article you’ve got going on here.

    • poYar

it’s not final, CDP said it already, but it keep a 60 fps on ultra from a single GTX 980 so it can only be better at final release…

      • PIRATE or NINJA

eh not really, textures could be added that make it harder to run not easier. they could also optimize it to compensate for this…….. anything we say in either direction tho is just a guess at best really.

  • Devast8nDiscoDave

Thanks consoles!…. said no PC gamer ever…

    • Shinobi

Why? I am a PC gamer and I am happy with how it looks. And happy there is no downgrade.

  • Shinobi

Well, that convinces me, no downgrade. If that’s how it actually looks I think the new one look better. Of course lighting is changed in some scene for better visibility and dramatic effect, but it is better I say in the new one.

  • ChatWraithShichi

I believe that CDprojekt stated that the cutscenes can happen at varying times of day or weather as well.

    • Shinobi

Oh yeah…I didnt think of that. Some cutscene probably change depending on times of day when you take mission.
