Yu Suzuki On Shenmue 3 KS: At $10 Million, It Will Be Truly “Open World;” Talks About Forklift And More

Yu Suzuki is currently doing a reddit AMA for Shenmue 3 Kickstarter and as expected, he gave some detailed answers for the campaign and its stretch goals.

Shenmue was not an easy game to make and considering the fact that it was one of the most expensive game for Sega, the Kickstarter goal for 2 million seems rather strange. Yu Suzuki took his time to explain the deal with the initial goal and teased some of the stretch goals provided they reach it.

According to Yu Suzuki, if Shenmue 3 Kickstarter reaches 5 million goal, it will allow him to add one of the things that he really wants to do for Shenmue 3. At $10 million, it will be truly an open world game.

I will say this: if we reach the $5 mil mark, one of the things I really want to do with Shenmue 3 will become a reality.

At $10 million, it will truly have the features of an open world.

He also comments on some of the features from previous games being added as Stretch Goals like the Forklift.

Regarding the story details, he was asked about the reason for time period of Shenmue, which was set in 1980. Suzuki expressed his reason that he really wanted to put forward the cultural difference in 1980 hence he choose that period.

I wanted put forward the differences in culture and values between the two periods.

Suzuki also talked about his favorite games that he worked on, and stated that he had fun working on all of them so he can’t really give an exact answer.

I had fun making all the games I worked on, and can’t say one was better than another. Boring answer I know, but it really is true.

Shenmue 3 Kickstarter is currently just under 3.5 million and since there is still plenty of time left, don’t be surprised to see it become the most funded gaming Kickstarter.
