Batman Arkham Knight director Sefton Hill has finally commented on the addition of free roam for other DLC characters in the demand.
Fans have been demanding for the addition of open world exploration for the side characters for a long time now. While we have the ability to play as the various characters in their own story DLC including Robin, Catwoman, Nightwing, Harley Quinn and Red Hood, they are still unplayable in the open world of Arkham Knight.
Sefton Hill recently made a lengthy post on the official forums of the game. You can read his response below.
Off the back of my recent Q&A on Twitter, we’ve had an influx of questions asking about the possibility of free-roaming around Gotham as characters other than Batman. We wanted to clarify that this is not a feature that we are currently working on and we have no plans to work on this. There are a few reasons for this, and we decided that it would be best to share these with the community rather than leave people to speculate.
When we set out to create the ultimate Batman experience in Arkham Knight, a big part of that was making an environment that feels natural and fun for the caped crusader to traverse and explore. Everything in the city is tailored to Batman – from the height of the buildings, to the width of the streets, to the lighting on the rooftops nd everything in between. Other characters can’t grapple-and-glide or drive the Batmobile like Batman, so for them to feel authentic they would need to navigate in their own unique ways. And when that’s done, even Gotham itself would need to be modified to get the best out of this new gameplay. Without a prohibitive amount of work, it just wouldn’t be fun or feel authentic to what makes these incredible characters unique.
Just as importantly: when you play as a character, traversing the environment is just a small part of the action – you need some actual gameplay to do. We spent 3 ½ years filling Gotham with missions for Batman, and it would take just as long to do justice to the other characters in Batman’s world.
However, even though we are not working on free roam for other characters, we are definitely listening to you, and your feedback is invaluable. We know you have been asking for more action for the playable characters, and that’s why we’ve been working hard on getting them into the AR challenges. As a studio, our philosophy has always been to put gameplay first, so it made more sense for us to get the playable characters in situations where they can get stuck into FreeFlow combat or invisible predator challenges rather than wander around a city that just wasn’t built for them. So, to confirm, we’ll be updating the game soon to allow character selection in all AR challenges, with FreeFlow combat coming first and invisible predator missions to follow.
All of this is to say: We’re working tirelessly to make Batman: Arkham Knight the biggest, and best Batman experience ever, and it’s awesome to have this community along for the ride.
Thanks again for your amazing support,
This basically confirms that there won’t be any update to add free roam for other characters, but they can be added to the VR Challenges in the game in a future update.
Batman Arkham Knight was released this June on the PS4 and Xbox One.
