Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow 2 is an upcoming Action/Adventure game for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC. It is the sequel to Lords of Shadow, which was recently re-released on the PC as “Ultimate Edition”. Castlevania Producer Dave Cox talks about his game and how he thinks that the sequel plays more like Zelda.
Speaking with Eurogamer, Dave Cox explains how they have given the players freedom of choice in the game, making it more like an Action/Adventure game in lieu of Zelda.
“Gradually you start to realise, I don’t need to go this way. I don’t need to follow the story. There’s almost an eureka moment where you go, you know what? I’m not going to go that way. I’m going to go back to the castle and just have a wander around. It’s that point where you realise, I can go wherever I want. But that’s a few hours into the game.”
“It’s more akin to a Zelda game in terms of its structure. It’s not like GTA where we just plonk you in. When we thought about doing a more open world environment we didn’t want to have it like Batman where you’re dropped in and there’s no real structure. Story is so important to us. We have to lead the player in that direction. But giving players freedom as well was important too. That’s the trade-off. If players don’t want to follow the story they don’t have to.”
The original Castlevania: Lords of Shadow was usually compared to Sony’s exclusive God of War series.
“The God of War comparisons really pissed us off.” says Dave Cox. He certainly didn’t like this comparison as seen by his comment on this matter.
When it comes to the length of the game, Dave Cox assures that it will take at least 20 hours. To make sure that the players doesn’t feel bored of the longevity of the game, they keep introducing new powers to the players, as late as 18 hours into the game.
“It’s hard to get across to people that this is 20 hours of new s*** happening every five minutes, even 18 hours in you’re getting new abilities. Dracula’s getting new things 18 hours into the game. That’s important in order to keep the pace and make sure there’s always something for players to do.”
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 is scheduled for a release on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on 24th February, 2014.
