Activision announced today that Destiny has sold $500 million worth of copies to retailers and first parties worldwide. Considering the fact that Destiny is an entirely new IP, this definitely makes it big news for Bungie, the creators of Destiny.
Destiny was always going to be popular, considering the marketing and hype that it received throughout its development. Activision gambled a lot of money on building this new IP, and it seems to have finally been paid off as they have reported that Destiny has sold $500 million into retail and first parties worldwide in 24 hours.
“Based on extraordinary audience demand, retail and first party orders worldwide have exceeded $500 million for Destiny,” said Bobby Kotick, CEO of Activision Blizzard. “This industry milestone marks another blockbuster success for our company and demonstrates our unique ability to create some of the most successful entertainment franchises in the world. The success of Destiny, along with the recent introduction of Blizzard Entertainment’s Hearthstone, is further validation of our unique capabilities to create great entertainment franchises from the ground up.”
Destiny is an ambitious new IP that has been released on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One on September 9th, 2014.
