Devil May Cry 5 Director confirms Nero’s lineage and reason for new design

Devil May Cry 5’s latest interview from Japanese magazine Famitsu had some really interesting information regarding the game’s lore and the main character, Nero’s, new design.

The trailer shown off at Microsoft’s E3 press conference featured Nero who was also the protagonist of DMC4. He has been for a long time rumoured to be Vergil’s son, which was even somewhat confirmed in the secret ending of DMC4: Special Edition but many were unsure if that was canon, however the interview is the first time the Director of the game confirmed this to be true.

Vergil is of course Dante’s brother and one of the son’s of Sparda. He’s supposed to be dead in the current timeline but many think that he’s still alive and probably the hooded figure who cut off Nero’s arm in the DMC5 trailer.

The director, Itsuno, supposedly wanted to make Nero look a bit more like Vergil so they decided to go with a new design for him.

Nero’s new design is apparently well-received.

Matthew: According to Itsuno, this model was chosen because we wanted him to look younger than Dante, and express that Nero is Vergil’s son.

Okabe: Some fans said that “he looks just like his father,” so I was happy people could see the similarity.
