Digital Foundry has recently released a brand new video on Dragon Quest XI for the PS4 and PS4 Pro. The video highlights the difference between the game running on both platforms and also shows the performance for the game including frame rate analysis.
Dragon Quest XI was developed on Unreal Engine 4 and this is the first time Square Enix has developed such a large scale JRPG on a third party engine, which is why it was interesting to see how the developers have managed to work out the technical aspects of the game. Thankfully Dragon Quest XI has support for the PS4 Pro including a higher resolution while it runs at less than 1080p on the PS4.
The Digital Foundry video as linked above goes in detail about the visual difference and points out that while Dragon Quest XI renders at a native 900p resolution on the PS4, it uses checkerboard rendering for PS4 Pro, resulting in a 1728CB resolution, which is then further upscaled to 2160p or 4K resolution. There is no major visual difference between both versions of the game aside from the resolution, however the checkerboard rendering can result in a slight blurry image during motion on the PS4 Pro.
Dragon Quest XI is currently only available in Japan but it has also been announced for a Western release in 2018.
