Dragon Quest XII Is “Still Many Years Away” Says Series Creator Yuji Horii

Dragon Quest series creator Yuji Horii has commented on the next game in the series saying that Dragon Quest XII is still many years away in a recent panel.

Dragon Quest XI launched last year in Japan and was released for the rest of the world this year back in September. We absolutely loved the game giving it one of our rare perfect 10 rating in the review. However, the next entry in the series won’t be out for a while as the series creator has confirmed after talking about it at a panel.

This panel was held at the computer entertainment developers conference CEDEC + KYUSHU 2018 on December 1. When Yuji Horii was asked about his next game, he had the following to say regarding the 12th mainline Dragon Quest game (via).

Level-5 president and CEO Akihiro Hino, who moderated the panel, asked Horii, “How is the 12th entry going?”

Horii responded, “I actually already came up with the keywords, but I can’t say anything here. (Laughs.)”

The game designer added, “However, since Dragon Quest XI‘s scenario was well-received, this time I want the same reception for the gameplay systems, but I could also surprise everyone and make it an epic. Now I just feel like teasing everyone. (Laughs.).”

Furthermore, Horii said, “I keep absentmindedly thinking about making the theme the feeling of ‘wanting to make dreams come true.’”

Likely discussing the topic more than he should, Horii closed by saying that a Dragon Quest XII is “still many years away.”

Dragon Quest XI is out now for the PS4, and it also launched last year for the Nintendo 3DS. It is still in development for the Nintendo Switch as Dragon Quest XI S.
