Best Action Game – Winner
Nier Automata

Nier might be a cult classic among fans but it was certainly not for its gameplay. When the announcement of Platinum Games behind Nier Automata was made, fans were rejoiced because while the game director Yoko Taro has all the right ideas for the story, he needed plenty of help in the gameplay department and the end result is the perfect combination of action and an engaging emotional story with memorable characters.

Best Adventure Game – Winner
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

Zelda-Breath-of-the-Wild-11-1024x576

The Legend of Zelda series attains its legendary status with Breath of the Wild setting new benchmark in the field of open world game design. The narrative and story took a hit but it seems to be worth it for the end product, which can take countless hours of your time to complete.

Best Western Role-Playing Game – Winner
Horizon: Zero Dawn

Horizon-Zero-Dawn-Storm-Birds-1024x569

Guerrilla Games delivered a great open world full of exciting enemies in the form of robotic dinosaurs. Horizon: Zero Dawn was a completely new IP but now it feels like it has been a part of the PlayStation family because of how likable the main protagonist and the game’s setting has been for the PlayStation fans.

Best Japanese Role-Playing Game – Winner
Persona 5

Persona 5 is GearNuke’s Game of the Year 2017 and it is also easily the best Japanese RPG this year. The game has a very stylish artistic style and attempts to take the social aspects even further with a new twist to the dungeon exploration.

Super Mario Odyssey is one of the most impressive open world platformer. Nintendo has seemingly crafted a world for Mario to roam around using his hat, which he can use to control almost everything in the game world.

Best Fighting Game – Winner
Tekken 7

Tekken_7_47-1024x576

Fighting games had a good year so far with Injustice 2 and Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite getting released this year, but it is Tekken 7 that offers the most fun among them. Not only the mechanics are finely tuned and synced with animations so you are not getting janky combat like Injustice, it also has a great character roster and a nice little story mode that goes even deeper in the series’ history.

Best Shooter Game – Winner
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds

playerunknown-battlegrounds-main-1024x576

This is basically a genre defining game that has completely changed the landscape for multiplayer online shooters. Just like Overwatch started the hero-focused craze last year, PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds has started the trend of Battle Royale in online shooters but there is no game out right that can offer the same experience.

Best Indie Game – Winner
Cuphead

Cuphead is the definition of a perfect product from its art style to its game design. The boss battles are carefully designed around the shooting mechanics and require you to utilize your skills. It also works well in co-op offering you the best experience possible without any distraction.

Best Strategy Game – Winner
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle

mario-rabbids-kingdom-battle-review-switch-2-1024x432

Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle was perhaps the biggest surprise this year. A game that looked silly on the surface turned out to a highly competitive strategy game with a lot of depth.

Best Open World Game – Winner
Assassin’s Creed Origins

ac-origins-review-ps4-1-1024x576

Assassin’s Creed Origins has a rich and detailed open world, expertly crafted by the developers at Ubisoft to make sure the information presented is as accurate as possible. The story might take full creative liberty but the locations and the open world makes you feel like you are actually exploring the ancient Egypt.

Best Horror Game – Winner
Resident Evil 7

Resident-evil-7-featured-image-1024x512

Resident Evil series hasn’t fared well with critics for the past few years but the release of Resident Evil 7 felt like it has blown new life into the series. The addition of PlayStation VR as an alternative gameplay mode makes it the best implementation of the VR in a full scale game so far.

Best Sports Game – Winner
Pro Evolution Soccer 2018

pro-evolution-soccer-2018-review-featured-1024x576

Sports games didn’t really have a great year with FIFA 18 being a particular disappointment and the likes of NBA 2K18 and WWE 2K18 all offering sub-par products. Pro Evolution Soccer 2018 is the only game that feels like it has managed to atleast retain some quality this year.

Best Racing Game – Winner
Forza Motorsport 7

forza-motorsport-7-review-xbox-one-1-1024x640

Forza Motorsport 7 is one of the most impressive racer this year. The game is a technical marvel on the Xbox One X. It also offers a great racing experience and features a lengthy single player mode.
