SOMA, the upcoming survival horror game that is currently being spearheaded by Frictional Games finally has a release date; September 22, 2015. Unfortunately, Xbox 360 and Xbox One console owners are going to be left bitterly disappointed because the title has only been confirmed for PC and PS4 at the moment. Frictional Games has not stated as to when the title will be ported to Microsoft’s console duo.
The plot of the game revolves around an unnamed controlled character who is currently stationed at PATHOS-2, which happens to be an underwater remote research facility with machines that start to develop human characteristics, and with those characteristics, the horror element becomes reintroduced in the upcoming video game title.
Frictional Games is no stranger to horror video games; the developing studio was the brains behind Amnesia: The Dark Descent, which immersed players in one of the most ‘spine-chilling’ experiences ever. New 12 minute gameplay trailer provided below, will allow players to get a better idea of what to expect when they muster enough courage to start playing the game.
Given the fact that the environment has been set in an underwater facility, Frictional Games will be taking advantage of the latest graphics engine to bring in embellished but haunting environments. Similar to Amnesia: The Dark Descent, SOMA too will not feature any combat and players will have to rely on a pure stealth and evasive mechanic in order to avoid whatever malicious entities are going to be encountered.
The studio has been working on SOMA for the past five years, meaning that the studio has put in a fair amount of both time and effort in order to live up to its reputation when Amnesia had been released. With only a few months remaining, Frictional Games is attempting to boost its notoriety in this particular genre once more.
