Last month, we reported on the PS4 outselling Microsoft’s Xbox One since November, 2015. Keeping it on at the top of the market for seven months straight.
In July, however, the Xbox One sold more units than the PS4. The PS4 has sold twice the number of Xbox One’s sold, but last month Microsoft’s console came out on top of the most sold consoles list.
Xbox Marketing Head, Mike Nicols, spoke to GamesBeat about the success of the Xbox One in July:
We’re honored that Xbox One was the best-selling console in the U.S. in July, and that total gaming hours on Xbox consoles globally were up 18 percent over last year, reaching 1.55 billion hours.
The reason behind the success of the console in July, might be the drop in price, bring the price down to $299 from $349. The price initially went down as a part of the spring sale, however, at the end of the sale, the price never went back up.
Aside from the price drop, Microsoft released their newest console, the Xbox One S, this month. That also had an impact on the sales of the console, helping it beat the PS4 for the month of July. The new console was well received by the fans as it sold out everywhere on release day. The new console is 40% smaller than the regular console, and has 4K Ultra HD, 4K Blu-ray and High Dynamic Range support. The console is also capable of upscaling games from 1080p to 4k resolution.
