Could Motomu Toriyama’s Next Project Be Final Fantasy X-3?

Final Fantasy XIII game director Motomu Toriyama seems to be the most likely candidate to direct another possible iteration in the Final Fantasy X saga.

While we haven’t gotten any official confirmation or announcement of Final Fantasy X-3, the recently released Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster teases a possible sequel to Final Fantasy X-2. The story is also further continued in a spin-off novel written by Kazushige Nojima, which is called Final Fantasy X 2.5.¬†Kazushige Nojima is the main scenario writer for Final Fantasy X/X-2 and is also currently working on Final Fantasy XV as a scenario writer. The story in Final Fantasy X 2.5 novel ended with a “To Be Continued”, hinting another possibility at the inevitable Final Fantasy X-3.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster was a huge success in Japan, where it outsold even a mainline spin-off title for Final Fantasy XIII in its debut week. It is also on its way to become the best selling HD remaster in Japan, selling higher than Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD on PlayStation 3 and the recently released Kingdom Hearts 1.5 HD Remaster on PlayStation 3. Knowing this, there is no doubt left in the possibility that Final Fantasy X-3 might eventually happen. Even Kazushig Nojima has claimed that Final Fantasy X-3 could be possible.

So the question on everyone’s mind might be, who could handle this project? Square Enix hasn’t really given the direction of such an important title in the franchise to an unknown director. Since Toriyama has just finished with his latest project and he also directed Final Fantasy X-2 along with the whole Final Fantasy XIII trilogy, he seems to be the most likely candidate here.

The other candidate could be Hajami Tabata, but he has got his hands full with directing Final Fantasy XV with Tetsuya Nomura. There is also Hiroyuki Itou, which hasn’t been given a chance to direct a mainline Final Fantasy title since Final Fantasy XII, sadly, he seems to be restricted to designing smartphone games for now.

Do you think that Motomu Toriyama will return to direct Final Fantasy X-3? Let us know in the comments below.
