Shenmue 3 is one of the largest Kickstarter success story. It was revealed at one of the most hyped E3 2015 press conference by Sony. Shenmue 3 was shown as a Kickstarter on stage at Sony’s E3 2015 press conference which resulted in the Kickstarter website crashing due to the flood of traffic. It managed to end its funding with close to 6 million, which was ahead of its initial goal. This significantly increased the scope of the project while letting other investors take an interest in it.
While Shenmue 3 still hasn’t been released yet, and it also missed out on its promised 2017 date for the Kickstarter, the game’s development is still progressing well although not without its fair share of controversy especially regarding the visuals of the game.
Recently, Ys Net, who are developing Shenmue 3 on Unreal Engine 4, showcased some new screenshots from the game. The last time we had seen the project was back at Gamescom 2017 so this new look appears to be an improvement over the goofy looking Gamescom build. It still lacks proper facial animation and features for some of the main characters but nonetheless, it manages to satisfy the itch of a brand new Shenmue game.
Shenmue 3 is currently confirmed for the PC and PS4 and it has yet to get a confirmed release window. The game is being developed on Unreal Engine 4 by Ys Net under the direction of series creator Yu Suzuki.
