The next Sonic the Hedgehog title confirmed to be in development

Sonic the Hedgehog developers Sonic Team have confirmed that the next Sonic the Hedgehog title is in development.

Sonic series producer Takashi Iizuka confirmed the news during a stream at SXSW Gaming 2019:

One more thing: The next Sonic title is in development and being worked on but we have nothing to show at this time.

The latest release in the Sonic franchise is Sonic Forces for PC, Nintendo Switch, PS4 and Xbox One released back in 2017. The game was met with mixed reviews by critics, who although praised the presentation and gameplay, claimed that the game’s technical issues and level design hindered the overall experience.

Earlier in the year, Sega also released Sonic Mania directed by Christian Whitehead, which ended up being the best reviewed Sonic game in the last 15 years. Sonic Team will certainly be aiming to replicate Mania instead of Forces for the new game.

Since the announcement wasn’t followed by any gameplay or other information, it’s probably very early in development. Stay tuned as we’ll keep you posted as we find out more.
