Ninja Theory’s Hellblade makes gameplay debut

DmC and Heavenly Sword developers Ninja Theory announced Hellblade last year and today we finally got to see a gameplay trailer. The game initially looked like a typical Celtic focused Hack n’ Slash, but after viewing the trailer the game is much more than that.

Inspired by Historic events, Hellblade tells the story of Senua and her battle against Mental Issues after a viking invasion. The topic of Mental Health is not something we’ve seen much of in games, Hellblade should definitely be unique in that regard.

Paul Fletcher, Psychiatrist and Professor of Health Neuroscience from the University of Cambridge, was hired to help with the game. He had the following to say

True understanding of mental health is not simply about books, lectures or verbal descriptions but from deeper engagement on all levels,

Working with Ninja Theory has shown me the potential that gaming has for sharing in a character’s experiences and engendering empathy in ways that go well beyond those offered by simple academic descriptions. Maybe this approach will contribute powerful new ways of challenging stigma.

Hellblade is set to release on PC and Playstation 4 in 2016. What did you think of the trailer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
