Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has passed away at the age of 55. His death was confirmed by Nintendo Japan and they have issued a short statement which you can read below.
Nintendo Co., Ltd. deeply regrets to announce that President Satoru Iwata passed away on July 11, 2015 due to a bile duct growth.
Satoru Iwata had skipped E3 earlier this year due to his health. He oversaw Nintendo during some of their best years including the Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii.
Iwata took the role of the President of Nintendo in 2002 after the retirement of Hiroshi Yamauchi. Under his direction, Nintendo rose to new heights with the release of Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii. He also actively took part in Nintendo Direct and had started his own series of interviews with developers called “Iwata Asks”.
