Octopath Traveler is surpassing the expectations of Square Enix and Nintendo. Not only the game is doing great digitally and claiming the number one position on most regional eShop charts, it also opened to twice the sales of Bravely Default in the UK.
The stock shortages faced by the game in Japan are even more evident if you take a look at the sell-through rate for the game. According to Dengeki sales tracker, the initial shipment of the game is already gone with the launch week taking 90% of sales, which is a big number for an RPG in Japan, especially one that is also a new IP.
Octopath Traveler opened to 107K sales in Japan as per the data provided by Dengeki. It sold through 90% of its shipment during its launch week, which means it shipped under 120K but most of it was sold out by the end of the week. This is one of the reasons the game charted strongly with digital sales on the Japanese eShop. It was also out of stock on places like Amazon and this prompted Square Enix to apologize for the stock situation.
Octopath Traveler is currently available as an exclusive for the Nintendo Switch. The game was developed by Square Enix and published by Nintendo.
