PlayStation 4 has sold more than 5 million units in Japan as revealed by sales tracker Media Create. The console managed to sell close to 30k units last week which has pushed the cumulative sales of the console in Japan to 5 million. This is a remarkable number considering the current state of dedicated gaming consoles in Japan where both the Wii U and Vita have failed to carry on the same success as their predecessors.
PlayStation 4 was released on February 22nd, 2014 in Japan or almost 3 months after it was released in North America and Europe. The initial console hardware was bundled with Knack as a free game to compensate for the delay but the sales of the console have been fairly steady with big third party support from Japanese developers. The most recent game is Dragon Quest XI for the PS4 which will be released on July 29th.
PlayStation 4 also has the advantage over the PlayStation 3 as it is selling faster than the PlayStation 3 so far, and has passed 5 million faster than what it took for PlayStation 3, which was released on November 11, 2006 and passed 5 million in sales after the release of PS3 Slim and Final Fantasy XIII in April 2010. More PlayStation 4 software was also sold compared to the PlayStation 3 during similar time frame.
