Sony has announced that they are opening the sign ups for the upcoming beta firmware update for the PS4. This firmware will update the system software to version 4.0, so it looks to be a significant addition to the system software.
Sony hasn’t disclosed any details regarding this new firmware so we don’t have any information on what new features can be expected, but given the emphasis on inviting friends to this firmware beta, there could be a greater focus on some social interaction feature in this new firmware update.
PS4 firmware update 4.0 will get detailed information once the release of the beta draws closer. As it stands, we can sign up for the firmware beta and hope to get in soon.

PS4 received its last major firmware update early this year and has continued to receive several stability updates afterwards. Compared to the PS4, its competitor, the Xbox One has managed to receive major firmware updates throughout the year. Sony is rather slow when it comes to the software side for PS4 but since the core of the operating system works perfectly fine, maybe Sony doesn’t really find it the need to update the firmware as frequently.
