PlayStation 4 is just hitting its stride in Japan as the console has managed to sell through 1 million units so far this year, bringing the cumulative total to more than 5 million sold through in Japan. The important thing to note here is that the PS4 is selling much faster than the PS3 launch aligned even though it launched a couple of months later in Japan compared to the rest of the world unlike the PS3, which was initially sold in Japan and then later released in the rest of the world.
Despite being on the market for more than 3 years now, Sony’s PlayStation 4 is slowly increasing its sale every year. It took the PS4 a full year to sell 1 million after launching in Japan on February 22, 2014. The sales were a lot slower in the start, mostly due to the presence of the PS3 and PS Vita that were still selling well at that time. It took the Japanese consumers a while to adopt to PS4 but the transition has started to increase each preceding year with 2017 becoming the fastest year for the PS4 to reach 1 million sales milestone in Japan.
If we compare the sales of the PS4 and the initial million it sold each year, it took the PS4 44 weeks to reach 1 million in sales from 2014 to 2015. However the sales began to grow at a faster pace in 2016 where it reached that milestone in 40 weeks. The PS4 has managed to reach this milestone this year in just 33 weeks and it is not slowing down any time soon. Square Enix has recently released Dragon Quest XI for the PS4 which managed to sell more than 1 million units in 2 weeks, also becoming the fastest million seller on the PS4. Capcom is following it with Monster Hunter World set to launch in early 2018.
