PS4 has finally passed 7 million sales milestone in Japan according to sales tracker Media Create, but it still has a long way to go before it can hit the 10 million sales of its predecessor. So far, PS4 is selling at a steady pace although the sales have been rather slow after the surge in interest early this year due to Monster Hunter World. The release of games like Spider-Man and Red Dead Redemption 2 will hopefully keep the sales healthy heading into the holidays. Next year, the major third-party Japanese game is Kingdom Hearts 3 followed by Resident Evil 2 Remake.
Software-wise, it will be hard to argue that PS4 is holding up really well. It also received a strong support from Japanese developers like Square Enix with Final Fantasy XV, Dragon Quest XI and Kingdom Hearts 3, or Capcom with Monster Hunter World. This has helped the PS4 solidify its lead over the PS3, which was on the market for over 10 years and hit the 10 million sales milestone after almost 9 years.
PS4 was slightly ahead of the PS3 if we align the sales of both consoles at launch. If the sales hold up, PS4 should have no problem hitting 9 million next year. It won’t be able to reach the sales of PS2, which was one of the best selling Sony console in Japan with more than 21 million units sold.
