Yeah, we know: movies and videogames usually don’t mix it up together. Unless you’ve got a series that works wonders in action horror (such as Resident Evil) or manages to pull a one-off (such as Tomb Raider), you’re probably going to end up with a rather uninteresting mess job.
Just don’t tell it like that in the presence of Insomniac Games and/or Sony personnel, ’cause they just signed off on a Hollywood animation project involving Ratchet and Clank. I’m not making this up, guys. In fact, It’s already on the PlayStation blog – and the movie is pegged for a 2015 release. As the official announcement states:
“The truth is, we’ve wanted to do a movie for a long time! Ratchet & Clank’s action, humor and galaxy-spanning adventures have really been the basis for a fantastic game series, and we think [it would] translate perfectly to the big screen.”
Now I’m certainly not going to say whether this is a wise move or not, although last year’s videogame-inspired Wreck-it Ralph did prove that it can be done. But all the same, the Ratchet and Clank series could very easily lend itself to a family-friendly animated action comedy. You can judge for yourself by watching the following teaser preview:
As for the entities involved with the project, Sony and Insomniac have pegged Rainmaker Entertainment and Blockade Entertainment, the latter of which has been responsible for Escape from Planet Earth as noted by IGN. On top of that, the full involvement of series veterans will be responsible for the movie’s voice acting – thereby ensuring that little to nothing will be lost in the series’ Hollywood translation.
