Red Dead Redemption 2 pre-load is downloading at an incredibly slow speed which could point towards a great number of users rushing to get it downloaded ahead of its launch.
In case you don’t know, Red Dead Redemption 2 is absolutely massive at launch with its file size inching closer to 92 GB without any potential day one update. This means that those who want to get the game on launch will have to download it all before this Friday. Thankfully, Rockstar Games had the insight to offer pre-load almost one week early, however, this doesn’t mean that everyone in the world was able to download it quickly.
Not everyone has the luxury to use a high-speed and unlimited bandwidth internet so with the massive download, it was understandable that those who had a digital pre-order will have to wait for a while before it is completely downloaded. The thing is, at the time of writing this article, the download is going at such a slow pace that it will be a miracle to get it downloaded before the Friday launch.
I have tested this on two different PS4 hardware. One is a regular launch model PS4 which is connected through Wi-Fi, while the other is a PS4 Pro connected through Ethernet cable. Both of these are barely getting any speed whenever I try to download Red Dead Redemption 2 pre-load on PSN. I also looked at websites like the official PlayStation Status page or DownDetector, and there doesn’t seem to be any issue listed there.
Update: Here is a video of it in action. Notice the slow download speed for Red Dead Redemption 2 compared to the update.
Update 2: I was finally able to resolve the issue and now get full download speed. DNS changing didn’t work but using the application to fetch the pkg file, downloading it for a few mins on PC, and then going back to resume download on PS4 worked perfectly fine. If you are having issues with slow downloads for any game or update on PS4, I highly recommended checking out this guide detailing all the necessary steps.
I tried downloading updates or other games and the download speed seemed normal for them. Even in the speed test on PS4, I get my full speed which is around 10 MB but shows up under 9 MB on the speed test for PS4. It seems to work fine for downloads though and mostly results in getting the full speed out of PSN. This doesn’t appear to be the case for Red Dead Redemption 2 pre-load for some strange reason.
Maybe this is only happening for a small sample size, but I hope that Sony manages to fix this issue so that fans who are eager to download Red Dead Redemption 2 can get their hands on the game soon.
