The Last of Us Part 2 has received multiple gameplay trailers but the multiplayer is still relatively unknown for the game. Now the first details around the multiplayer were revealed through a job description.
The Last of Us Part 2 will apparently include character customization. Other things that are listed in the job description confirm that there will be an in-game store as well. This sounds similar to how Naughty Dog handled the multiplayer of Uncharted 4 with customized characters and an in-game store selling microtransactions.
The job description (via) is for a Multiplayer Server Programmer at Naughty Dog and there are other similar positions available at the company that hints at the game using dedicated servers for the multiplayer. It is possible that the game will still use p2p for multiplayer since this is just speculation for now.
We are looking for a server programmer who loves constructing a scalable, stable, and secure ecosystem of services for players to enjoy. You will usher them through the entire multiplayer experience, from first login, through matchmaking, and then granting rewards players can use to customize their characters in the store. As one of the caretakers of the live environment, you will be a critical part of the team that launches the game’s services.
Naughty Dog normally doesn’t reveal the multiplayer at the major events throughout the year, so we will have to wait for an interview or until the game is closer to launch to get further details about the multiplayer in The Last of Us Part 2.
