The Witcher Author A. Sapkowski Demands Additional Royalties, CDPR Calls It ‘Groundless’

CD Project Red appears to be in another dispute with The Witcher series creator and author Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski.

The Witcher is based on a set of fantasy books written by a polish author Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski. It was taken by CD Project Red to create The Witcher franchise of video games which has taken the world with storm. This has led to the author demanding additional royalties from CD Project Red, however, they call this demand ‘groundless’ and state that all liabilities were properly discharged.

According to the official press release shared by CD Project Red, the author “expects payment of additional royalties beyond what had been contractually agreed upon between himself and the Company.”

The press release states that as per the company’s opinion “the demands expressed in the notice are groundless with regard to their merit as well as the stipulated amount. The Company had legitimately and legally acquired copyright to Mr. Andrzej Sapkowski’s work, i.a. insofar as is required for its use in games developed by the Company. All liabilities payable by the Company in association therewith have been properly discharged.”

The Witcher 3 sold more than 10 million copies and helped CD Project Red grow into a powerhouse developer. They are currently working on Cyberpunk 2077, which is also based on the tabletop game of Cyberpunk 2020. It is currently in development for the PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
