Today marks the 12th anniversary of the Kingdom Hearts series

A combination that no one saw coming, Square Soft and Disney, who thought their joint efforts would result in one of the most popular gaming franchises of all time? Well it happened and today marks the 12th anniversary of the Kingdom Hearts series. 28th March saw the release of the original Kingdom Hearts on the Playstation 2 in Japan, interestingly it’s also the release date for the English release for it’s sequel.

Kingdom Hearts which started off as an experimental game proved to be successful both critically and financially, the series has went on to sell over 20 million copies not including the recent HD remaster. Square finally announced the long awaited third title in the main series Kingdom Hearts 3 at last year’s E3 after putting off fans with years of spin offs on various platforms. Series creator Tetsuya Nomura ensured fans that Kingdom Hearts 3 will be end of the trilogy but there are many more games to come. Nomura is currently working on both Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3, although Final Fantasy XV is set to be release first.

Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMIX will be released sometime in 2014 exclusively for the Playstation 3 so fans have something to play while they wait for third title in the main line series. Kingdom Hearts 2.5 HD ReMIX will include HD remastered versions of Kingdom Hearts 2, Birth by Sleep and cutscenes from Re: Coded.

Kingdom Hearts is one of my personal favorite series ever, let us know your favorite memory from the series in the comments below.
