Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed in a recent interview that they’re not planning to release a mainline Assassin’s Creed game next year.
The series which has 10 mainline game released so far already starting back in 2007, took a year break in 2016 to change focus. This clearly showed with Origins, which was a refresher the series definitely needed. After this year’s Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey it seems Ubisoft will take another break.
Yves mentioned that the reason that Origins and Odyssey are able to come out in subsequent years is that two teams were working on them at the same time.
On Assassin’s, we had a game [in 2018] and we have one this year, but we are not going to have a full-fledged Assassin’s next year. It’s just because the team were working separately, so we have two games now, one year after the other. But next year you’re not going to have a fully fledged one.
Origins was developed by Ubisoft Montreal while Odyssey is being developed by Ubisoft Quebec. Both aforementioned studios usually take turns in developing the games allowing the French publisher to release Assassin’s Creed games every year. Chances are the next game will be developed by Montreal, but Ubisoft Sofia could also maybe get a go given their work on Assassin’s Creed: Rogue.
Unity and Rogue were both released at the same time in 2014. Although both games were available on PC, Unity was only made for PS4 and Xbox One while Rogue was for PS3 and Xbox 360. Although Unity was intended to be the “main” game that year, critics and fans both preferred Rogue.
Yves also promised great support for Odyssey, promising “possibilities” for a couple of years.
What you’ll have is lots of content coming on [Assassin’s Creed Odyssey]. The team really want to give, on a regular basis, some new possibilities for play, so when you get [Odyssey] this year, you’re going to get in for a couple of years, actually.
The next iteration in the series, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, releases on PS4, Xbox One and PC on October 5, 2018.
