Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Range axed from Video Output Settings in PS4 firmware 2.5

In a rather odd move from Sony, the PS4 firmware version 2.5 has removed the option to set the console to output in the Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr color space. The option was particularly of importance to those who use the PS4 as a BluRay player on modern HDTVs that support full range RGB.

As seen in the above image, the option to output at the very end i.e. ‘Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr Range’, was present prior to firmware 2.5. Interestingly, this was not mentioned in the change log for the System Software update.

Unfortunately, the absence of this video setting means that Blu-ray content will appear washed out, as blacks will be displayed as 16/16/16 gray and the full color spectrum will not be utilized.

As to why the option was removed is anyone’s guess. We’ve reached out to Sony for clarification and will update the story once further information becomes available. Until then, let us know if you used the Y Pb/Cb Pr/Cr video setting prior to firmware 2.5 for watching Blu-ray content in the comments below.
